Positive Masculinity

Assignment

Come up with a concept and design a series of books on it. Create a series of brochures for different audiences on the same subject. Design a content-rich magazine (i.e., Mother Jones, Wired, or Ad Busters). Or create a complex online website with heavy content like The Daily Beast, NRDC, UTNE, or Newsweek. Design deliverables may include a book, a series of books, large format brochures, posters, an ad campaign, an app, a game content-rich magazine, an installation, an environmental campaign, a logo and/or branding system, a brand book, kit, website, exhibit, film, or motion media campaign—or any other appropriate graphic design artifact. Each component must have depth, typography, and complexity. The outcome will be a minimum of 3-4 uniquely designed pieces across multiple media or an equivalent comprehensive artifact.

Concept

This a unique campaign on how men can change the toxic masculinity narrative, embrace their softer side, and push positivity into their lives. Based on today's issues of toxic male culture, this set features a special electronic publication, as well as posters and bumper stickers to help spread and raise awareness about Positive Masculinity. Because being a man doesn't mean you're automatically toxic, but your actions can make you toxic.

Posters

Posters_all_together.jpg

Concept

These posters disprove three myths and stereotypes common in the toxic male culture by showing what they can do instead. Instead of saying, "boys can't play with dolls, men can't cook, or ballet is for girls," it highlights the opposite, how it helps boys become better fathers, better chefs, and better athletes because of it. It also includes a description of Positive Masculinity and a QR code for the E-Publication.

All three posters can be viewed here.

Epublication

Concept

I wanted a book that showcased the main difference between Positive and Toxic Masculinity., I didn't want to just put men down for being toxic, but explain why certain behaviors are dangerous to the male culture and why we as a society should change those behaviors. It takes a village to raise a child, and if we can teach them young how to behave more positively, we can change society as a whole. Because it isn't men who are toxic, it's behaviors, which is what the publication focuses on, recognizing and changing those behaviors.

Bumper Stickers

Concept

I wanted to add a little humor to the statement "be a real man," so I then came up with three sayings that essentially change the narrative and showcase Positive manly traits, such as having a good cry or hugging another guy. Or even taking a bubble bath to relax after a long day. I figured that with the tongue-in-cheek humor, the best way to showcase it would be to put it on a bumper sticker, so people would see it and think about its message.
