Virtuous Design Book

Assignment

This project was one where we were given the text by Gui Bonsiepe, and we had to create a book around those essays and any essays of our choosing. I chose Michael Bierut's Seventy-Nine Short Essays on Design. Because the essays focused on virtuous design, and virtuous to me means rules or virtues, I decided to model the book after the German Illuminated Manuscripts as a nod to the history of graphic design.

Concept

This hand-bound and hand-painted text is from Gui Bonsiepe's Virtues of Design and Seventy-Nine Short Essays on Design by Michael Bierut. Based on the German Illuminated manuscripts, this text aims to explain and define what it means to be a virtuous designer.

Concept

When I hear the word "Virtuous" I always think of Virtues, or moral codes one should follow. Almost like rules that people should live by. So when we were assigned the text Virtues of Design, I thought to myself "these are the rules of design we should follow". Due to this thought, I wanted to call back to where the rules of design would have first started, and that was with the German Illuminated Manuscripts, the first instance of Graphic Design. I wanted the book to be hand-bound and painted, on aged paper, and to include a drop cap as well as flourishes for the decorations.
